DJ Dats is a producer and DJ from the arctic Northern Finland, who started his ventures into electronic music around 2013 by producing music heavily influenced by juke and footwork, but has since made his name first and foremost as a skillful producer of house music. The shift towards house happened when DJ Dats started to incorporate more and more house and techno to his previously rap and disco based DJ sets, which led him to try and produce his own 4-on-the-floor beats for the dancefloor.

By the time the Finnish label Top Billin Music released Dats’s first EP Allowance Trax in 2018, he had cultivated his own style that attracted positive attention for example from Junodownload who wrote that the EP “...go beyond the typical 4/4 framework to land on majestic and unexplored terrains. ’Allowance Trax’, for example, merges all the best elements of house, techno, acid and, yes, balearica.” This newest release Let’s get high by EABE Records, continues to refine those elements with the infectious title track and its blissful remix by Motorized, a duo of highly skilled funk craftsmen also originally from Northern Finland.

The original version of Let’s get high starts with some nice lo-fi buzz, rough percussion and solid hi hats. Then a rhythmic, dreamy synth segue heeds a drop that brings in a banging two chord riff that forms the basis of what follows: a fresh sounding lofi house journey with some extra heavy drums. The same minimalistic two-chord riff mutates throughout the track giving out plenty of unique flavours. After the second drop, the infectious
vocal loop “Let’s get high” kicks in. By that time the combo of filtered chords and a perfectly matching beat has
most listeners bumping their fists at the steady speed of 121 fist bumps per minute.

On the remixed second track, you’re first greeted with the same percussion as on the first one, but this time you’re in for a totally different kind of journey. The lazy syncopated kick pattern asks a juicy, bouncing 80s bassline out to play. Soon a lush three chord sequence and some choice Paradise Garage era percussions join in to create an exotic fruit of pure funk, one that curiously enough was grown and harvested very near the arctic circle. Some more synths join on the second half of the track to keep the bliss going for full five minutes.
